Missed the first half of the season? There’s still time to catch Pregones/PRTT’s mid-season Latinx theater lineup, featuring live music, immersive storytelling, and bold performances. If you haven’t seen a show yet, now is your chance to experience some of the best Latinx theater in New York, with productions running through mid-2025 in The Bronx and Manhattan.

Pregones/Puerto Rican Traveling Theater is a multigenerational performing ensemble and multidisciplinary arts presenter with venues in The Bronx and Manhattan’s theater district. The organization is dedicated to celebrating a Puerto Rican/Latinx cultural legacy through original plays and musicals.

Pregones was founded in 1979 by a group of artists led by Rosalba Rolón, focusing on creating new works in the style of Caribbean and Latin American performing ensembles. Puerto Rican Traveling Theater, founded in 1967 by stage and film icon Miriam Colón, was one of the first bilingual theater companies in the U.S., fostering Latino artists and cultural connections.

The two organizations merged in 2014, strengthening their role in amplifying underrepresented voices in American theater. This lasting dedication has made Pregones/PRTT a significant contributor to New York’s dynamic arts scene.

Upcoming Events Below

Burned: March 3 - 20 | The Bronx

Alejandra Ramos Riera’s interactive forum theater play, Burned, tells the story of Linda—a former hospital worker during the COVID-19 pandemic—who now shares her living space with her sister Chelsea and Chelsea’s boyfriend Joe. In this performance, audience members help decide the outcome, creating a unique experience at every show.

The play examines themes of exhaustion and the call for help in challenging times, backed by support from the Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund for Pregones/PRTT’s Abrazo/Embrace initiative for community wellness and mental health. Directed by Jorge B. Merced, Burned is a timely reminder of our shared struggles and resilience.

Pregones/PRTT presents March is Music 2025, a month-long concert series from March 1–30, showcasing an eclectic mix of Latin, jazz, fusion, and classical performances. Highlights include Grammy-nominated Papo Vázquez Pirates Troubadours and the debut of master percussionist Anthony Carillo’s Latin band Yámbawa. As part of the series, Bronx Piano Sundays will offer free matinee concerts, bringing live music to the community at no cost.

Beyond its theatrical and musical programming, Pregones/PRTT is dedicated to fostering the next generation of Latinx artists. The Beyond Workshop Series (March 17–28, 2025), presented in partnership with R.Evolución Latina, provides intensive training in acting, dance, and voice.

This program helps participants refine their skills while developing leadership and collaboration. The workshop also honors the legacies of Miriam Colón and Raúl Juliá, two trailblazers who paved the way for Latinx representation in theater.

Parrots at The Pagoda:

May 1- 25| Manhattan

Parrots at the Pagoda is a drag origins story inspired by the life of Johnny Rodríguez, a pioneering queer icon in Latinx performance. Rodríguez was not only a standout vocalist and trios musician but also a groundbreaking female impersonator and nightclub owner.

Written and directed by Jorge B. Merced, this production features vibrant costumes and timeless songs that pay tribute to Rodríguez’s influential legacy. The show offers a heartfelt portrayal of a cultural trailblazer whose impact continues to resonate today.

It combines musical and dramatic elements to deliver a performance that is both colorful and compelling. Music is by Johnny Rodríguez, with arrangements by Ricardo Pons and Desmar Guevara, and musical direction by Desmar Guevara.

Dulcineas: June 19–28 | The Bronx

In Dulcineas, director Rosalba Rolón offers a fresh interpretation of a classic Spanish tale by shifting the focus to its often-overlooked female characters. This production reimagines elements of Miguel de Cervantes’s Don Quixote with a blend of humor and poignant drama.

By centering voices that rarely take the stage, Dulcineas challenges traditional storytelling and invites audiences to rethink familiar narratives. The performance promises a thoughtful and engaging experience as it rounds out the season’s lineup.

A word from the Artistic Director

"Unearthing stories —whether real or fictional— not commonly shared on stage is one of the challenges that excite us the most as a theater company. It is also what connects us with our visiting artists. More often than not, we discover immediate, urgent relevance to our collective lives, and love sharing our findings with our audience. Our 2024-25 Season is bursting with extraordinary tales and memorable characters, with all the attending lessons, surprises, and joys that audiences have come to expect from Pregones/PRTT, said Rosalba Rolón, founding Artistic Director of Pregones/PRTT."

"At Pregones/PRTT, every season is a new invitation to reimagine the power of storytelling," said Jorge B. Merced, Co-Artistic Director of Pregones/PRTT. “This year, we push artistic boundaries and deepen connections with our audiences, fostering a space where creativity and community thrive together."
