What happens when survival means confronting the unthinkable? On Sunday, March 16, 2025, the Bronx Documentary Center (BDC) will hold a free screening of Death by Numbers, an Oscar-nominated documentary that follows school shooting survivor Sam Fuentes as she works to heal and reclaim her voice. The event starts at 3 p.m. at 614 Courtlandt Ave in the Bronx.

Directed by Kim A. Snyder, Death by Numbers offers an unfiltered look at Fuentes' journey through trauma, self-expression, and justice. A survivor of the February 14, 2018, Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, Fuentes was wounded in the attack that killed 17 people. As she prepares to face her shooter at his sentencing trial, she turns to poetry and journaling to process her emotions, weighing the complexities of grief, punishment, and resilience.

Snyder, known for the Peabody Award-winning Newtown and Sundance selection Us Kids, continues her work documenting the impact of gun violence with Death by Numbers. Through personal writing and courtroom testimony, the film examines the scars left behind—not just on individuals, but on entire communities reckoning with the aftermath of tragedy.
