Garifuna Heritage Walking Tour-BCHS-April Events 2025

This spring, the Bronx County Historical Society (BCHS) steps beyond museum walls to celebrate Bronx culture in the streets, on screen, and inside its historic sites. With events honoring Garifuna Heritage Month, launching a new public film series, and opening a unique music exhibit later this April, BCHS continues to serve as a vital resource for residents, educators, and visitors alike.

What’s Happening This Week?

Happyland Memorial Garifuna Heritage Walking Tour

Sunday, April 6, 2025 – Originally set for 11:00 AM

🟥 Update: Start time has been moved to 12:00 PM due to increased chance of rain at 11:00 AM.

Led by José Francisco Ávila of the Garifuna Coalition USA and The Garifuna Experience in NYC, this 90-minute walking tour explores the cultural history of West Farms, including the tragic 1990 Happy Land Social Club fire. It’s a powerful way to connect with Bronx history through the lens of the Garifuna community and their lasting legacy.

Garifuna Heritage Month celebrates the rich history, culture, and contributions of the Garifuna people—descendants of West African, Central African, Island Carib, and Arawak peoples. Recognized in the Bronx since 2009, the month runs from March 11 to April 12 and highlights the vibrant presence of Garifuna-Americans in New York City. [Garifuna History]

Final Days to Catch “HISTORIAS: The Stories Behind the Images”

On Display Through Sunday, April 6, 2025

Location: Museum of Bronx History, 3266 Bainbridge Avenue

If you visit the museum this weekend, you’ll catch the final days of

HISTORIAS: The Stories Behind the Images, a powerful multimedia exhibit by Seis del Sur—a collective of Bronx-born photographers whose work documents decades of neighborhood resilience and cultural change. Featuring never-before-seen photos from Bronx icons like Joe Conzo, Jr., Ricky Flores, David González, and Edwin Pagán, the show reshapes the borough’s narrative with personal reflections, forgotten histories, and a community-driven lens.

The addition of newer voices like Carmen Mojica and Abigail Montes only deepens the exhibit’s impact, making HISTORIAS a must-see for anyone interested in the real story of The Bronx—told by the people who lived it.

Whether you’re tracing your roots, learning about the borough’s literary legends, or touring historic homes, BCHS offers access to one of New York’s most important hyper-local collections. Its two museums—The Museum of Bronx History and the Edgar Allan Poe Cottage—welcome visitors every weekend and provide a powerful look into Bronx life from colonial times to the present day.

  • The Museum of Bronx History is located in a restored 1758 colonial fieldstone house. It features rotating exhibitions and is open Saturdays and Sundays. [Location: 3266 Bainbridge Ave]

  • The Edgar Allan Poe Cottage, the writer’s final home, sits within Poe Park and is also open to the public on weekends. [Location: 2640 Grand Concourse]

Both sites offer free admission to NYC residents through Culture Pass NYC and private tours for groups and students. Behind the scenes, the BCHS Research Center and Archives serve thousands of researchers, historians, and students annually.

"The staff couldn't have been more helpful. I spent 1 1/2 days there. The historic Bronx newspapers on film and the manuscript collection could have kept me there another 3-4 days, easily."

Museum Hours

Sat: 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Sun: 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM

Private tours available by appointment.
