New Cast, Old Virus, Same Dread: This trailer teases a brutal return to the world of the Rage Virus—where survival still comes at a cost.
The world of 28 Days Later is returning with a new chapter. Director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland, who created the original film back in 2002, are reuniting for 28 Years Later, which hits theaters on June 20, 2025. This time, the story picks up nearly three decades after the outbreak of the Rage Virus — and the nightmare still isn’t over.
In this new film, a group of survivors live on a small island off the coast of England. The only way in or out is a single guarded bridge. When one person leaves the island and heads back to the mainland, they discover a changed world full of new threats — not just from the infected, but from other people too.
The creators describe it as a story about rebuilding after everything has fallen apart. Director Danny Boyle said the team asked themselves what the world might look like after an apocalypse. Writer Alex Garland also reminded fans that the infected in this series did not die. They’re still living people — just sick with the Rage Virus, which makes them dangerously violent.

The film stars Jodie Comer, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and Ralph Fiennes, along with Jack O'Connell and Emma Laird. Behind the camera, Boyle is once again working with cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle, who helped shape the gritty, fast-paced look of the original movie.
Cillian Murphy, the star of 28 Days Later, isn’t in this one, but he’s helping behind the scenes as an executive producer — and may return in the future.
This movie is the first part of a new trilogy. The next film is already in the works and will be called 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. The project is already getting buzz after its early screening at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival.

Boyle says part of making a horror movie is pushing things as far as you can. That mindset helped make 28 Days Later a game-changer in horror — and now, 28 Years Later appears set to keep that legacy going.
