Initially, Billy Crystal offered Perez a different role, which she turned down. However, he later offered her the character of Denise, knowing the actress had firsthand experience with the foster care system as a ward of the state of New York.
"I was terrified at the idea," Perez admitted. Despite her hesitation, Crystal's support helped her embrace the role. In her portrayal, the actress describes Denise as an anxious foster mother who, influenced by her own time in foster care, is protective of Noah and always concerned about making the right decisions for him.
Perez also shared why she wanted to add a nervous edge to her character, discussing it with Crystal and series writer Sarah Thorp. Reflecting on her own experience in foster care, she explained, "If you were part of the system, you know how the system works, and how it doesn't work, and unfortunately, I saw a lot of kids not do well."
The Brooklyn native mentioned that she drew from her childhood experiences in foster care to shape how her character, Denise, would respond to the challenges and relationships with her co-stars' characters.
