Criminal is Coming to Prime Video: Ed Brubaker and Jordan Harper to Co-Direct
The award-winning graphic novel Criminal, created by novelist Ed Brubaker (Westworld, Batman: Caped Crusader), is set to become a series on Prime Video. This interlocking universe of crime stories has won multiple Eisner Awards. Brubaker, who wrote the graphic novel and the pilot script, will co-direct the series with acclaimed crime fiction author Jordan Harper (known for Hightown, Gotham, and The Mentalist).
Criminal, a creator-owned comic book series, is the brainchild of writer Ed Brubaker and illustrator Sean Phillips. With a collaborative journey spanning more than two decades, Brubaker and Phillips have crafted acclaimed works such as Criminal, The Fade Out, Kill or Be Killed, Reckless, and Pulp. Their extensive collection of best-selling graphic novels has transcended cultural boundaries, being translated into over a dozen languages worldwide.
Notably, Criminal stands out as the top-selling, internationally published graphic novel series in their repertoire. Individually, Brubaker has made significant contributions to major comic book publishers like Marvel and DC Comics, leaving his mark on iconic titles such as Batman, Catwoman, The Immortal Iron Fist, and Captain America. Noteworthy among his creations is the character known as the Winter Soldier.
Harper is a renowned author and television personality. He has won several awards for his writing, including the Edgar Award for Best First Novel for She Rides Shotgun. This novel is now being adapted into a feature film, with Taron Egerton set to star. Additionally, Harper's book, Everybody Knows, was named one of the best crime novels of the year by the New York Times in 2023.
“Criminal is a beloved graphic novel created by the most iconic team in the history of comics,” said Nick Pepper, head of U.S. SVOD wholly-owned development, Amazon MGM Studios. “I know our global Prime Video customers will immediately embrace this story, and I look forward to working with Ed, Jordan, and the team to bring it to the screen.”
"Sean and I have been building this world in our books for over a decade, and now to be able to bring it to life for Amazon is just incredible. And to have Amazon support the project the way they have, and show so much faith in my and Jordan's vision for the show is even more incredible,” said Ed Brubaker.
The series is executive produced by Ed Brubaker and Jordan Harper, alongside Sean Phillips, Sarah Carbiener, and Phillip Barnett. Legendary Television (The Dark Knight, 300, The Hangover) will also serve as an executive producer. The series is produced by Amazon MGM Studios.
