Apple TV's 'The New Look' Chronicles Christian Dior & Coco Chanel During WWII
The New Look is a historical drama produced by Apple Studios and DB-AK Productions. It consists of 10 episodes that follow fashion designers Christian Dior, and Coco Chanel as they navigated the horrors of World War II and launched modern fashion.
The series was inspired by true events and filmed exclusively in Paris. The first three episodes of the highly anticipated series will premiere globally on Wednesday, February 14, 2024, on Apple TV+. The following episodes, one per week, will be released every Wednesday through April 3.
Set against the World War II Nazi occupation of Paris, the series focuses on the pivotal moment in the 20th century when the French city led the world back to life through its fashion icon Christian Dior. As Dior rises to prominence with his groundbreaking, iconic imprint of beauty and influence, Chanel’s reign as the world’s most famous fashion designer is put into jeopardy.
The interwoven saga follows the surprising stories of Dior’s contemporaries and rivals from Chanel to Pierre Balmain, Cristóbal Balenciaga, and more; and, provides a stunning view into the atelier, designs, and clothing created by Christian Dior through collaboration with the House of Dior.
The New Look features Emmy Award winner Ben Mendelsohn (Secret Invasion) as Christian Dior; Academy Award winner Juliette Binoche (The English Patient) as Coco Chanel; Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Catherine Dior; John Malkovich (In The Line Of Fire, Billions) as Lucien Lelong; and Emily Mortimer (The Ghost and the Darkness) as Elsa Lombardi.
Also included in the ensemble cast is Claes Bang (The Outlaws) as Spatz, Michael Carter (House of Dragon, An American Werewolf in London, Star Wars) as Maurice Dior, David Kammenos (Murder in Devils Bridge) as Jacques, and Hélène Cardona (Upload) as Seamstress.
Grammy Award-winning Jack Antonoff has produced a contemporary and immersive soundtrack for the series. The soundtrack features covers of popular songs from the early to mid-20th century, performed by renowned artists such as Bleachers, Florence Welch, Lana Del Rey, Matty Healy (The 1975), Beabadoobee, Nick Cave, Perfume Genius, and more.
The series is written, executive-produced, and directed by Todd A. Kessler. Along with Kessler, Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Mark Baker serve as executive producers. Helen Shaver (Vikings, Law & Order: Special Victims Unit) also directs four episodes.
